Marshall University has announced its decision to decline the invitation to participate in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, citing concerns for player health and safety. The university's football team had recently achieved a significant milestone by winning its first Sun Belt Conference championship, marking it as one of the few programs nationwide to win championships in three different conferences.

The decision comes after recent changes in key personnel and the evolving landscape of college athletics, including NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) agreements and the transfer portal, which have impacted the team's roster. Marshall University emphasized that their current participation numbers pose a major concern for the health and safety of their student-athletes.

"This is a tough and unimaginable decision for a program with such tradition and pride," stated Marshall University. "After consulting with our independent medical experts, coaches, and players, we reached this decision and emphatically believe this is the best decision for our student athletes."

The university expressed regret over any disruption caused to those involved, particularly extending apologies to the U.S. Military Academy. "Army’s football program embodies the highest values of discipline, honor and service," Marshall said. "We wish Army much continued success."

Marshall also thanked various organizations for their understanding during this process. "We wish to thank the Sun Belt Conference, the American Athletic Conference and the Independence Bowl for their consideration," they noted.

Despite not participating in the bowl game, Marshall remains proud of its 2024 championship team. The university looks forward to future successes under new Head Coach Tony Gibson.

"We are optimistic about the future of Thundering Herd football," Marshall expressed gratitude towards fans and community support as they transition into a new chapter.
