Marshall University will host the sixth Alys Smith Symposium on Women Professionals on April 1 at 7 p.m. in the Don Morris Room of the Memorial Student Center. The event is open to the public and includes a reception.

The symposium's keynote speaker is Judge Stephanie Thacker, an alumna of Marshall University and a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. The event will also feature a panel discussion with local women in the legal field, followed by a Q&A session to discuss experiences and challenges faced by women in these professions.

Sponsored by the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program and the Office of the President, the symposium aims to celebrate women's achievements in various professional fields.

“We are so fortunate to be able to host Judge Thacker for this event, and I am incredibly indebted to my colleague Patricia Proctor for making the connection,” said Dr. Hilary Brewster, director of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program. “I’m also excited to host so many other incredibly accomplished Marshall alumnae who then chose a career in the legal field. So many people think about going to law school, and this will hopefully shed light on the important, difficult work of becoming a lawyer or paralegal. This event is particularly exciting since Alys Smith is also an attorney with years of experience in the courtroom.”
