A student and a professor from Marshall University have won the first prize at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 2025 Virginias Conference. The event took place on March 29 in Beckley, West Virginia.

Josh Brubaker, a junior in civil engineering, earned the top spot in the “Hardy Cross” oral research presentation category. He presented his research titled “A Computational Investigation of a Non-Homogeneous Elastic Material Undergoing Wave Propagation” alongside his mentor, Dr. Arka Chattopadhyay, who is an assistant professor of engineering.

The team from Marshall University outperformed competitors from other universities such as Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia, and West Virginia University. This victory is notable as it is the first instance of the trophy being taken out of Virginia.

As a result of their success, the Civil Engineering Department at Marshall University will maintain possession of the traveling trophy until the next ASCE Virginias Conference in 2026.
