Marshall University sophomore Eddie Sorah has been selected for the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Spark virtual program, which is a competitive initiative for language learning. Sorah, who majors in International Affairs and Japanese, will engage in nine weeks of intensive Japanese language study this summer. The program includes live instruction, cultural exchanges, hands-on activities, and virtual tours of important Japanese sites.

Sorah aims to enhance his Japanese skills and achieve fluency through this opportunity. Participation in the CLS Spark program grants him automatic semifinalist status for next year's CLS in-person overseas study scholarship program, should he choose to apply. The latter program provides a fully funded, immersive language and cultural experience abroad.

He is considering a career in translation or interpretation for government or intergovernmental organizations, roles that require advanced language proficiency.

Marshall University’s Office of National Scholarships offers support for students, alumni, staff, and faculty applying for competitive programs like the Critical Language Scholarship and Fulbright awards. For inquiries, Heather Smith can be contacted at ons@marshall.edu.
