The Marshall University Foundation recently celebrated the retirement of Dr. Ronald G. "Ron" Area, who has served as CEO since July 2007. The event took place on October 18 at Brad D. Smith Foundation Hall, with attendees including donors, board members, staff, and campus partners. Elizabeth "Beth" Area was also recognized for her support alongside her husband over the past 17 years.

Nicolas "Nico" Karagosian has taken over as president and CEO of the foundation as of August 19. He expressed gratitude for the Areas' contributions: “We are incredibly grateful for Ron and Beth’s 17 years of remarkable service and leadership,” Karagosian said. He noted that their dedication has left a lasting impact on Marshall University.

Several speakers paid tribute to Ron Area's work during the celebration, including Nancy E. Campbell, chair of the foundation Board of Directors; Marshall University President Brad D. Smith; Amy Area Maxwell, daughter of the Areas; and the Areas themselves as guests of honor. In recognition of his contributions, the conference center at Brad D. Smith Foundation Hall will be named after Dr. Ronald G. Area.

President Smith praised Ron Area's influence on the university: “Ron Area has been more than a colleague – he’s been a dear friend,” he said.

In addition to honoring his career achievements, a scholarship fund has been established in his name and that of his wife—the Dr. Ronald G. and Mrs. Elizabeth L. Area Graduate Scholarship Fund in the College of Education—endowed by Dr. R. Mark and Mrs. Monica Hatfield.

Reflecting on their time at Marshall University, Ron Area shared: “Beth and I are deeply grateful for the kindness and friendship we’ve received over the past 17 years.”

During his tenure with Marshall University Foundation, Ron Area led significant initiatives such as the Marshall Rises campaign from 2016 to 2021 which exceeded its goal by raising $176 million.

Before joining Marshall University Foundation, Ron Area held leadership roles at Oklahoma State University Foundation from 1992 to 2004 where he managed private fundraising programs that raised over $260 million.
