Marshall University recognized for operational efficiency at Tambellini Future Campus Awards

Marshall University received an honorable mention in the Operational Efficiency and Sustainability category at the recent Tambellini Future Campus Awards on Thursday, June 27, during the Future Campus Summit in New York City. This award recognizes the university’s commitment to innovative practices that enhance operational effectiveness and promote sustainability across its campus with technology.

Jodie Penrod, Marshall University Chief Information Officer, accepted the award at the Future Campus Summit in New York City on June 27, 2024. The Tambellini Future Campus Awards celebrate higher education institutions that lead the way in strategic technology adoption to improve academic and administrative operations.

In the evolving landscape of higher education, Marshall University stands out for its strategic adoption of innovative technologies, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI). These technological advancements have streamlined operations and contributed to sustainability goals.

Marshall University’s initiatives have significantly reduced its environmental footprint while streamlining processes to better serve students, faculty, and staff.

“Marshall University’s AI commitment extends beyond technology – it involves strategic planning, interdisciplinary collaboration and educational innovation,” said Jodie Penrod.

Highlights of Marshall University’s efforts include:

- Marshall’s AI Presidential Task Force is analyzing the use of AI for best practices so Marshall University can become a benchmark for other institutions as they begin their AI journey.

- Marshall is actively piloting M365 CoPilot for essential productivity tools such as Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel. By using design thinking, Marshall is assessing the return on investment (ROI) of these AI-powered tools, fostering collaboration and productivity.

- Marshall has standardized its approach to AI in teaching and learning with syllabi language regarding the use of AI in courses. This language assists faculty in setting an expectation of AI use based on their comfort level.

- The IT Service Desk is leveraging GPT functionality to drive self-service and more efficient response to technology issues. Marshall plans to extend this functionality throughout other service departments to assist students with a modern platform for finding information related to their academic journey.
