Marshall University has announced that Soledad O’Brien, a well-known broadcast journalist, author, and philanthropist, will deliver the keynote address at the 2025 graduation ceremonies. The events are set for May 10 at the Marshall Health Network Arena, with sessions at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

O’Brien is recognized for her work with multiple media outlets, including CNN, NBC, HBO, and PBS. She has covered a wide range of topics from natural disasters to political upheavals and has received numerous awards. Recently, she highlighted Marshall University's "Marshall For All: Debt-Free" program in her series, "Matter of Fact," and participated in the Women Warriors Summit in Huntington.

Marshall University President Brad D. Smith expressed enthusiasm about O'Brien’s participation, saying, “It is an honor to have Soledad O’Brien joining us for commencement this year. She has an exceptional way of connecting with audiences and possesses a genuine and inspired understanding of our campus and our community. I know we will be entertained, educated and empowered by her remarks. We are very grateful that she accepted our invitation.” O'Brien will also receive an honorary degree from the university.

Around 1,500 students are expected to graduate in separate ceremonies. The first ceremony at 9:00 a.m. will include students from the Lewis College of Business, College of Education & Professional Development, College of Science, College of Engineering and Computer Sciences, and Division of Aviation. The second ceremony at 2:00 p.m. will feature graduates from the College of Health Professions, School of Pharmacy, College of Liberal Arts, College of Arts and Media, and Regents Bachelor of Arts program.

The Marshall Health Network Arena will enforce security procedures with metal detector screenings and visual bag inspections. It is a clear bag only venue. More information on parking, security, and other details can be found on the university’s commencement website. A livestream of the ceremony will also be available online for those unable to attend in person.
