Marshall University is preparing to honor four new inductees into its June Harless Center for Rural Educational Research Hall of Fame. Scheduled for April 25, the induction ceremony marks the center's 25th anniversary, celebrating its ongoing efforts to support educational initiatives in rural West Virginia.
The 2025 inductees include Michele Blatt, the state superintendent of schools in West Virginia; Emily Calandrelli, an MIT engineer and science education advocate known as the "Space Gal"; Teresa Eagle, the dean of Marshall's College of Education and Professional Development; and Sheryl Sandberg, a prominent business executive and philanthropist. Sandberg's charitable foundation significantly contributed $5 million to Marshall For All, Marshall Forever.
The celebration is a private affair with provisions for media attendance. Attendees are expected to gather at 5 p.m. for a reception, followed by the induction ceremony at 6:30 p.m., and a dinner at the Brad D. Smith Foundation Hall.
In recognition of the inductees, Tarabeth Brumfield Heineman, the executive director of the June Harless Center, shared that “These honorees embody the center’s mission by tirelessly advocating for equitable access to high-quality education for all students, regardless of their zip code.” She praised their dedication and innovative efforts, highlighting their role in providing opportunities for students in West Virginia.
The June Harless Center was founded in 2000, drawing inspiration from James “Buck” Harless and the late June Harless. It aims to provide leadership for educational initiatives, focusing on school improvement and educational growth. Services offered include professional development in STEAM, literacy, and early childhood education, along with partnerships to enhance educator support and student achievement in rural areas.
