Marshall University is set to expand its presence with the acquisition of new property on 4th Avenue, as authorized by the Board of Governors. This purchase is a part of the university's $200 million Innovation District project, aimed at transforming the area into a hub for innovation and technology. The properties are located at 1518, 1520, and 1524 4th Ave., although specific plans for their use have yet to be detailed.

According to Marshall University President Brad D. Smith, "The purchase of this property signals another step forward in our collaboration with the city of Huntington and the state of West Virginia to cultivate a vibrant hub for innovation and economic development."

In addition to property acquisition, the board has approved reallocating state funds for deferred maintenance projects. This includes addressing roof damage at Gullickson Hall among other improvements across more than 30 projects funded since 2022. Notable work under this initiative, dubbed “Project: Shock and Awe,” includes the demolition of Laidley Hall and plans for Holderby Hall's demolition.

The board also received positive news from CliftonLawsonAllen, an independent accounting firm that provided a favorable audit opinion on Marshall University's financial statements for the past two years.

Following an executive session, details about executing a personnel contract were discussed but not disclosed publicly.

President Smith highlighted ongoing efforts in fostering campus culture and engaging with political leaders while celebrating student-athletes' achievements in soccer and football competitions. He remarked on these activities as "amazing Marshall moments" contributing to engagement and growth.

Smith and board chair Geoff Sheils expressed gratitude towards Patrick Farrell for his seven-year tenure on the board as he transitions into his role as mayor of Huntington.
