The Society of Yeager Scholars at Marshall University is set to host the 2024 Symposium Lecture titled "Arts in Appalachia." The event will feature a keynote speech by Leah Turley, who serves as the creative artistic director of the Appalachian Artists Collective and director of Marshall University Theatre ETC. This lecture aims to shed light on the rich artistic traditions in Appalachia and discuss the arts' role in community empowerment within the region. Open to all, this free event requires no prior registration.

Scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, November 8, at the Brad D. Smith Center for Business and Innovation, Turley will address attendees with insights from her work promoting Appalachian voices through theater and education. Her address is anticipated to offer an inspiring view on how art intersects with Appalachian identity.

Before Turley's keynote, participants can join breakout sessions featuring various Appalachian artists and creators:

- Sassa Wilkes: An artist and educator recognized for visual art that challenges societal norms.

- Jamie Sloane: A composer and self-taught visual artist whose work blends classical influences with modern elements.

- Rahul Mehta: An award-winning author and poet whose writing delves into themes of identity both within Appalachia and globally.

- Noah Ritchie: A student playwright whose works provide fresh perspectives on young Appalachian experiences.

This symposium provides an opportunity for public engagement with prominent figures in Appalachian arts, exploring their contributions to the region's cultural narrative.

The event is sponsored by Marshall Health Network, the Society of Yeager Scholars, and Alpha Psi Omega National Theatre Honor Society.
