The City of Huntington has been recognized for its efforts in fostering an inclusive environment for the LGBTQ community, earning a perfect score in the 2024 Municipal Equality Index. This marks the sixth year in a row that Huntington has achieved this distinction from the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest LGBTQ civil rights organization.
The 2024 Municipal Equality Index evaluated 506 U.S. cities based on several criteria, including nondiscrimination laws, municipal employment policies, and inclusiveness of city services. Huntington scored 100 out of 100 points. "Receiving a perfect score in the 2024 Municipal Equality Index validates what our community already knows -- that Huntington is a city of honor, respect and compassion," said Mayor Steve Williams.
This year, 130 cities across the United States received perfect scores, an increase from last year's 129. Among these were two West Virginia cities: Morgantown and Huntington. The average score nationwide was reported as 72.
Other West Virginia cities included in the report were Charleston with a score of 96, Wheeling at 75, Charles Town at 53, Lewisburg at 37, and Parkersburg at 26. Notably, for eight consecutive years, Huntington has been designated as an "All-Star" city for scoring above 85 points despite being located in a state without statewide LGBTQ-inclusive non-discrimination laws.
In total, there are currently 62 "All-Star" cities nationwide that have implemented best-practice policies such as local non-discrimination laws and transgender-inclusive health benefits for city employees.
