Marshall dropped the championship game of the Hostilo Hoops Community Classic, 48-43, to Norfolk State Wednesday night at Enmarket Arena in Savannah.
"Tough way to end this trip to Georgia which was generally pretty good for us," Marshall Head Coach Tony Kemper said. "Offensively, we've got to shoot better. Defensively, there's things that we could've and should've done better, but we held them to 48. The free throw differential was big, and turnovers, we're not doing very good at that right now."
Marshall (3-2) committed 22 turnovers leading to 20 Norfolk State points. The Herd made nine trips to the free throw line, while the Spartans went 16-21 from the charity stripe.
Norfolk State (6-1) entered the game averaging 77.5 points per game. The Herd held the team 29 points under average.
Marshall relied heavily on its defense in Tuesday's victory over Purdue-Fort Wayne, and had to in the first half again Wednesday. The Herd held a potent Norfolk State offense to 24 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes, with nine turnovers. MU led 10-8 after one, and 22-18 at the half. Senior guard Kendall Miller led MU with five points in the first quarter.
Norfolk State found its best offensive production in the third quarter, outscoring the Herd, 17-13 to even the game at 35 entering the fourth. Coach Kemper's side took the lead at 41-37 midway through the final frame on a Terah Harness jumper. But Marshall was held without a field goal for the final 6:24 as NSU came away with the 48-43 victory.
Roshala Scott led the team with 17 points. The junior guard finished with the tournament with 50 points across three games.
