Marshall University softball head coach Megan Smith Lyon announced the 2023 softball schedule Monday. Marshall will play 25 games at home at Dot Hicks Field this season, including matchups with Alabama, Pitt, and Virginia Tech.
"I am excited about our upcoming season and our first season in the Sun Belt," Coach Smith Lyon said. "The Sun Belt is an extremely competitive softball conference, so we have put together a strong non-conference schedule to help prepare our team. We are also hosting several nationally-ranked programs at The Dot, including Alabama and Virginia Tech, which will allow our fans to watch us compete against some of the best teams in the country. We can't wait to see all of you out this Spring cheering us on!"
Following a 35-18 campaign in 2022, the Herd will return 10 players, while adding five transfers and three incoming freshmen.
The 2023 season will get started February 10-12 at the Florida Spring Games in Leesburg, Florida. Marshall will face competition including the Butler Bulldogs, who won 31 games in 2022. Other tournaments in the month of February include the 2023 Chattanooga Classic (Feb. 17-19) and the Liberty Classic (Feb. 24-26).
The Herd open Sun Belt Conference play the following weekend with a trip to Boone, N.C. to face App State (Mar. 17-19). The inaugural home Sun Belt series will be the following weekend against Southern Miss from March 24-26 at Dot Hicks Field.
The month of April features a mix of conference and non-conference play with a number of marquee matchups in Huntington. On April 18, the Herd will host national-power Alabama. The following weekend, April 21-23, fellow 2021 WCWS participant, JMU will visit Marshall for a Sun Belt weekend series. Virginia Tech will then visit Dot Hicks Field on Tuesday, April 25. The Herd will host their final weekend set for April 28-30 against Texas State.
Marshall will visit Georgia Southern May 4-6 to close out the regular season. The Sun Belt Conference Tournament is slated for May.
