Marshall University men's golf senior Tyler Jones won the 2022 Joe Feaganes Marshall Invite individual crown on Tuesday at the Guyan Golf & Country Club in Barboursville. The Herd finished second at the event four shots behind tournament champions Appalachian State.
"It was a very exciting day for us," Marshall men's golf head coach Matt Grobe said after the event. "We fought all the way back from a 13-stroke deficit to take the lead for a short time, but we weren't able to hang on for the win. Tyler Jones played incredible this week and won by three strokes! Clayton Thomas had a really good week and I was so happy to see the improvement from our first tournament. Christian (Boyd) has played two solid events to start his year. Overall as a team we had a lot of good moments this week and I am hoping we keep improving. These guys work so hard. I am looking forward to our next event at The River Run Collegiate."
Jones finished the event with a score of eight-under par. The Westerville, Ohio, native bogeyed just three of the 54 holes he played across the three-round tournament. He closed his final round of the event with a two-under par 69. The senior had 11 birdies with 40 pars, fifth most at the event.
Freshman Clayton Thomas also finished the third and final round at Guyan with a two-under par 69 during his final 18 holes. The native of Proctorville, Ohio, collected four birdies in his last 10 holes and finished tied for 13th. Senior Christian Boyd placed in tied for 17th.
Graduate student Kyle Mitchell had a team-best five birdies on Tuesday as redshirt sophomore Joseph Kalaskey had a trio birdies, and redshirt sophomores Andrew Wyss and Bennett Zeitner each had a pair. Wyss finished the third round one-over par (72).
