Cost of college went up for all students at Marshall University

In-state tuition and fees rose 4.2 percent for 2018-19 at Marshall University, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

West Virginia residents paid $8,128 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $330 more than the $7,798 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 129 percent more than residents this year, or $18,614. Their price tag grew 4.2 percent from $17,856 in 2017-18.

About 79 percent of the school's undergraduate population are West Virginia residents. About 20 percent are residents of other states and 1 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 96 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 1,651 students received grants or scholarships totaling $16.7 million and 1,040 students took out student loans totaling more than $6.1 million.

Including all undergraduates (13,204), 7,264 students used grants or scholarships totaling $64.8 million, and 5,322 students took out $42.8 million in federal student loans.
