The Carter G. Woodson Lyceum at Marshall University is organizing the 2025 Black History Month Poster Competitions for students across various educational levels. The submission deadline is set for November 15 at 10 p.m., and this year's theme is “African Americans and Labor.” Students from elementary, middle, and high schools, along with those from Marshall University, are invited to participate with one entry per student. Entry into the competition is free.

Winners will receive monetary prizes: $250 for the winner at Marshall University, while first-place winners in elementary, middle, and high school categories will receive $100 each, with their teachers receiving $50.

Entries will be evaluated on how effectively they express the theme “African Americans and Labor,” their social impact in terms of improving race relations or preserving Black history, visual impact through composition and execution, and a statement detailing the research conducted by the student. This statement should be at least 100 words long.

Participants may use digital tools or traditional media like letterpress, silkscreen, markers, paint, pens, collage, stitching, photography, mixed media among others to create their posters. If using traditional methods, entries must be scanned or photographed for online submission.

Submissions should adhere to specific format requirements: posters must be 11 x 14 inches in size and submitted as JPG or PDF files not exceeding 4 MB or 1,000 pixels in any dimension.

Entries can be submitted via the website: https://www.marshall.edu/woodsonlyceum/poster-contest/. Winning designs will be revealed during a ceremony in early 2025 and may also be displayed on campus and featured on The Woodson Lyceum’s website. Winners must complete paperwork to claim their prizes.

For inquiries regarding the competitions, contact Dr. Carline Waugh at waughc@marshall.edu or Professor Burnis Morris at morrisb@marshall.edu.
