Marshall University announced on Mar. 31 that it will hold its fifth annual Community Cares Week: Giving Back to the Herd from May 19 to May 22, inviting hundreds of volunteers to participate across its campuses.

The event encourages alumni, students, faculty, staff, and community members to volunteer for projects aimed at improving and beautifying the university’s campus and surrounding communities. Organizers say the initiative is designed to foster a sense of unity and service among those connected with Marshall University.

President Brad D. Smith said, “Each year, Community Cares Week shows what’s possible when the Marshall family comes together with a shared purpose. As we celebrate our fifth year, it’s inspiring to see the pride people take in giving back to a place that means so much to all of us.”

Volunteer participation has increased over time; last year more than 1,000 individuals contributed over 3,400 service hours during the week. Many served on campus while others joined through alumni networks in their hometowns. Staff also led projects and supported daily activities throughout the event.

Members of the public are invited to volunteer for this year’s Community Cares Week. Those who register will receive a T-shirt, lunch on their day of service, and entry into door prize drawings. For those unable to attend in person, contributions can be made by purchasing items such as bottled water or snacks from an Amazon wish list supporting volunteers.
