Marshall University announced on Mar. 31 that its Technology Transfer Office will host a free seminar focused on intellectual property protection from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, at the Weisberg Applied Engineering Complex in Room 1105 on the Huntington campus. The event will also be accessible virtually through Microsoft Teams.
The seminar aims to provide attendees with an overview of intellectual property law and technology transfer processes, which are important for those involved in research and innovation at universities and beyond. Understanding how to protect inventions and creative works can benefit students, faculty, entrepreneurs, and community members interested in safeguarding their ideas.
Led by attorney Terry Wright of Stites & Harbison PLLC and Amy Melton, director of Marshall’s Technology Transfer Office, the session will cover key topics such as patents, trademarks, trade secrets, copyrights, statutory requirements for obtaining a patent, university ownership of inventions, differences between patent applications and technical publications, inventorship versus authorship distinctions, and steps for preserving patent rights within academic settings. Attendees will also learn how to determine if an invention is ready for patenting.
Wright brings experience advising a range of clients from small companies to multinational organizations across consumer goods and life sciences sectors. He has expertise in cardiovascular biology as well as molecular biology research areas. Wright regularly helps companies and university offices develop strategies based on patent-focused intellectual property.
Registration is required but there is no cost to attend the seminar. More information about registration can be found at https://events.marshall.edu/department/murc or by contacting Melton at tto@marshall.edu or calling 304-696-4365.
