Marshall University’s Graduate Humanities Program, in collaboration with the Historic Glenwood Foundation, has created the Kemp W. Winfree Memorial Scholarship to honor Kemp W. Winfree, who passed away in 2024. Winfree was known for his commitment to education, history, and community engagement throughout his career. He held positions as vice president of the Marshall University Graduate College and executive director of the Historic Glenwood Foundation.

During his tenure at the foundation, Winfree supported a partnership with Marshall’s Graduate Humanities Program that increased opportunities for both students and faculty. In 2014, he played a key role in launching the Glenwood Center for Scholarship in the Humanities. This center provides support for research related to the Glenwood estate and studies on Charleston and the Appalachian region. Winfree also mentored students within the program.

“Kemp Winfree’s vision and leadership continue to inspire our work,” said Dr. Luke Eric Lassiter, director of the Graduate Humanities program. “Through this scholarship, we can carry forward his commitment to education and community by investing in the next generation of scholars.”

The newly established scholarship will award up to $2,500 per year for up to two years to students enrolled in a Master of Arts in Humanities program. Priority will be given to those whose projects are linked to local or regional history or align with Glenwood’s mission of education and outreach.

“This scholarship unites Winfree’s passions for both Glenwood and higher education,” said Marla Griffith, executive director of the Historic Glenwood Foundation. “Remembering him this way ensures that those passions, as well as his spirit of mentorship, will continue to inspire and influence future generations.”

Applications for the scholarship will open each spring semester; recipients will be announced by semester’s end with funding starting in the fall semester. Those interested in contributing can contact Marshall University’s Director of Graduate Humanities Program.
