The Marshall University Board of Governors convened on February 5 for a regular session, during which members reviewed committee reports and discussed updates on academic programs and budget matters. No formal actions were taken at the meeting.

Board members indicated that they are confident in the university’s current operations and noted that planning for the upcoming semester is progressing as scheduled.

President Brad D. Smith reported to the board about the university’s increasing student enrollment numbers. “Fall 2025 enrollment has now been published at a national level,” Smith said. “The results showcase how Marshall is well on its way to becoming a demonstration project for what is possible.”

Smith explained that while national figures show college enrollment rising by about 1%, Marshall University experienced an increase of more than 7.5%. He also noted improvements in student retention rates, which he described as important for student success.

Smith updated board members on plans for Listening Tour 2.0, a series of 30 sessions intended to gather input from the campus community before commencement. This initiative follows a similar listening tour conducted in 2022 and aims to collect insights that will guide future university decisions.

During the meeting, four faculty members were recognized for their achievements:

– Dr. Mark Zanter, professor of Music and director of the School of Art & Design, received a 2025 ASCAP Plus Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers.
– Kae Bradley, Communication Studies instructor, was awarded a $19,000 grant from the American Historical Association in partnership with the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Program for her work on Appalachian culture in English language learning education.
– Dr. Mindy Yeager-Armstead, chair of Natural Resources & Earth Sciences, was featured in Environmental Monitor magazine for research aimed at improving flood predictions using hydrologic models and remote sensing technology.
– Dr. Amanda Capino, clinical associate professor of pharmacy, received the 2025 MHN Excellence in Pharmacy Advocacy Award recognizing her leadership and advocacy efforts within pharmacy practice.
