Marshall University and FASTER WV launch entrepreneurship microcredential series

Marshall University announced on Mar. 25 a partnership with Advantage Valley’s FASTER WV to introduce a new entrepreneurship microcredential series aimed at helping aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners develop practical business skills.

The initiative is intended to provide accessible, skill-focused learning opportunities for individuals looking to start or grow businesses. Courses are delivered through the Marshall Skills Exchange, which offers short programs designed for immediate workplace application.

Bryan Shaw, director of entrepreneurial development for Advantage Valley, developed the course content. The series covers key topics such as accounting, finance, legal registrations, market research, social media, and marketing. Shaw said, “Whether someone is exploring a side-hustle, launching a new venture, or strengthening an existing business, these courses provide immediate value in areas like finance, marketing, and business planning.”

Julia Spears, assistant provost of online education and certification at Marshall University said: “Through this partnership with FASTER WV, Marshall is expanding access to the tools, knowledge and support entrepreneurs need to turn ideas into businesses.” The program receives grant funding from The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation.

The courses are flexible and can be taken individually or combined for broader skill development. Current Advantage Valley clients can access the courses free by contacting their FASTER WV coach for coupons; non-clients may enroll at $49.99 per course. Upon completion of the series participants earn digital credentials that can be shared with employers or professional networks.
