Jim Thornton to deliver Marshall University commencement address on May 9

Jim Thornton, known as the announcer for the television game show “Wheel of Fortune,” has been named as the 2026 Spring Commencement speaker for Marshall University. The university announced on Mar. 9 that Thornton will address graduates during ceremonies scheduled for Saturday, May 9 at the Marshall Health Network Arena.

Thornton’s selection as commencement speaker is significant for both students and the broader university community. As a graduate and former Homecoming Grand Marshal, his return highlights ongoing connections between alumni and Marshall University.

“Being invited to give Marshall University’s 2026 Commencement Address is a tremendous honor,” Thornton said. “Every time I’m on campus I am overwhelmed by the pride and enthusiasm I feel from EVERYONE. Marshall holds a special place in the hearts of Huntingtonians like me, and I am incredibly proud to help us all celebrate this achievement together.”

Thornton began his broadcasting career after high school at WOWK-TV before joining WMUL-FM, Marshall’s student radio station, as a freshman in 1983. He later moved to Los Angeles to pursue voice work, eventually becoming an announcer for “The Price Is Right” in 2004 and joining “Wheel of Fortune” in 2011.

Marshall University President Brad D. Smith welcomed Thornton’s return to campus. “Last fall, Jim honored us by serving as our Homecoming Grand Marshal,” Smith said. “We’re thrilled he has agreed to return as our commencement speaker. Once you’re part of the Herd, that connection to this university lasts a lifetime.” Smith has served as the institution’s 38th president according to the official website.
